ISC HIGH PERFORMANCE APPOINTS ASIA'S LEADING HPC EXPERT AS 2019 PROGRAM CHAIR
FRANKFURT, Germany, May 23, 2018 – The organizers of ISC High Performance, are very pleased to announce the selection of Prof. Yutong Lu, of the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou, China, as the ISC 2019 Program Chair. This new appointment begins a new journey for ISC High Performance, which has only seen men hold this position for the last four years. This not only strengthens the international nature of ISC, it also diversifies the conference with new perspectives.
The 2019 conference will once again be held at Forum Messe Frankfurt, and will run from June 16 through June 20, 2019. This is the 34th conference in the series, and will focus on topics in high performance computing (HPC), storage, network, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
As program chair, Prof. Lu is working closely with the ISC program team to define the ISC 2019 topics, while also leading the 2019 steering committee, spearheading the effort to further elevate the value of ISC High Performance for the HPC community. She will be receiving the baton from the 2018 program chair, Prof. Horst Simon, of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The position of the annually rotating ISC program chair was first created in 2015 to establish a continuous knowledge-sharing process with HPC leaders who play a pivotal role in advancing the field.
Lu is the Director of National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou, China. She is also the professor in the School of Computer Science at Sun Yat-sen University, as well as at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT). Her extensive research and development work has spanned several generations of domestic supercomputers in China, which includes her role as the deputy chief designer of the Tianhe supercomputers. She is also leading a number of HPC and big data projects under the support of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Guangdong Province. Her current research interest includes large-scale storage systems, high performance computing, and computer architecture.
Lu received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees of computer science from NUDT. She was bestowed a first class award and outstanding award for Chinese national science and technology progress in 2009 and 2014. Her continuing research interests include parallel operating systems, high-speed communication, large-scale file systems and data management, and advanced programming environments and applications.
“During the past 10 years, I was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to ISC,” said Lu. “My participation coincided with a period of rapid development in supercomputing technology, which was reflected by the conference’s expanding scope and depth.”
“As part of the international HPC community, ISC has committed to including more countries and people in order to foster a broader array of ideas and experiences. That commitment has provided attendees a forum for exploring new technologies and novel solutions to advance scientific research and accelerate industrial innovation.”
“It is my honor to serve as the ISC 2019 Program Chair,” continued Lu. “I will do my best to improve the technical program, expand the range of participants, and present a conference that allows more people to take advantage of the latest technology developments in HPC.”
Lu is currently involved in the 2018 program, most notably as the Chair of the HPC in Asia Session, which aims to bring together Asian countries with supercomputing capabilities. As part of this session, the representatives of the participating nations will discuss the possibilities of collaborative efforts. In addition, a status report on technological developments in Asia will be shared with the ISC attendees.
The organizers are also very pleased to announce the selection of the following topics, which will be addressed in in-depth sessions at the next conference.
- Next-Generation High Performance Components
- Exascale Systems
- Extreme-Scale Applications
- HPC and Advanced Environmental Engineering Projects
